Fitting Tips

Before You Can Pick a Hat

A perfectly proportioned hat is dependent on many factors, but there are a few main things that can help to determine what works for your individual proportions.

The first step is to find out your hat size and face shape in our fitting guide. Try comparing a head-on picture of yourself to the face shape profiles we have provided.

Once you have determined the face shape that best describes your profile, the next step requires a bit of information that you will find in our Anatomy of a Hat guide.

Choosing the Right Hat

To complement your individual face shape, look for crowns that contrast your features, and brims that are in that coveted “Goldilocks” area of “just enough, but not too much”. For instance, if you have a tapering face shape, wear a crown that is a little lower and squarer in silhouette.  Likewise, if you have a squarer face, try to find a crown with a little more taper.

Consider the “visual weight” of a hat. A taller, wider hat bears much more “visual weight” than a lower, shorter-brimmed hat. That said, those with fuller features tend to look better when they wear a hat that is tall enough to balance this proportion. Inversely, those with smaller features are best suited in hats that do not overwhelm.

Choosing the Right Hat

Frank Sinatra once said, “Cock your hat—angles are attitudes.” Not only does a tilted hat help to evoke how you are feeling in the moment, but it also helps to break up straight lines that normally might make a hat look too tall or too wide. Also, remember that the human face is very seldom perfectly symmetrical. A hat that is very slightly tilted back and to one side can make all the difference in the world. By breaking up these straight lines, you create a more organic and visually pleasing look that is both stylish and complementary to any face shape.
