Keep Your Hat in Tip-Top Shape

 

We may be biased, but we are kind of partial to hats. We want to see you enjoying your hat for years to come. Proper care and handling of your hat will keep it looking as good as the day you bought it. 

 

Top Tips For Caring For Your Hat

  • Avoid handling the crown of the hat as much as possible, especially at the pinch. When putting on the hat, handle it by the brim in front and back.
  • When the hat is not being worn, make sure to place the hat upside down on the crown as opposed to setting it down on the brim. Store the hat upside down resting on the crown, in a supportive box or on a clean surface.
  • Avoid placing the hat near heat sources, such as in car windows, near radiators, or on top of a lamp as heat can shrink the sweatband and cause damage.
  • In keeping a wool hat clean, use a lint roller to clear off any debris that has collected on the surface.
  • Before storing a fur felt hat, it is suggested to use a soft brush in the direction of the hat’s nap to clear off any dust and maintain the correct nap of the fur. This can be done by brushing counter-clockwise on the top of the hat and clockwise on the bottom. The hat is brushed in these directions to follow the nap of the felt.
  • Keep straw hats free of dust with a soft brush or by spray misting a soft cloth with water and wiping off the straw with that cloth. Other than these simple tips, there is not much that can be done to clean a straw hat.
  • Generally, straw hats are not intended to be worn in the rain.
